Day 14

Life is Like . . .

“Some say life is a bowl of cherries,” I heard the comedian say. “No! It’s the pits!”

Forrest Gump said life is like a box of chocolates.

Sometimes all we can see in life are those pits. We might bite into a hard but gooey candy that sticks to our teeth, and we can’t seem to get rid of it. Or we might get a smooth, creamy center that melts in the mouth. (I know, there are many of you who actually like the sticky stuff but bear with me.)

Multiple studies have shown that laughter and smiling help lower blood sugar and blood pressure, reduce stress, boost immune systems, and release natural painkillers and serotonin.

Sounds good, right? But how do we get there?

Tim Tebow may have some insight for us: I’m just thankful for everything, all the blessings in my life, trying to stay that way. I think that’s the best way to start your day and finish your day. It keeps everything in perspective.

Thankfulness and gratitude seem to be the keys to laughter, smiling, good health, and joy.

Long before all the modern pundits piped in, Paul tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Gratitude, no matter our circumstances. Even if life seems like a bowl of cherry pits, there are still cherries to be grateful for. We can be grateful for all the chocolate, despite not knowing what we’re going to get or biting into one that we don’t like.

Rejoice! Why? Because we are loved and we’ve been saved by grace and that not of ourselves, but by the willing sacrifice of the Son.

There is no greater love than this, no greater reason to be grateful. “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.”  (Philippians 4:4 CSB)

Day 30

During this season of Thankfulness, I’m always reminded of the people
who fill my life with joy. They never fail to surround me with
encouragement and they believe in me when I struggle to believe in
myself. My husband has been one of my staunchest supporters throughout
my career. He never, ever lets me think “I can’t do this” when I hit one
of those moments where I doubt I ever should have started writing.

I’m thankful that I’ve had the chance to return the favor for him
through the years and lift him up as we approach a new season in our
marriage and our careers. God has been with us each step of the way, and
I’m forever thankful to our Lord for never giving up on us.

Day 24

Every year, a handmade sign graces the center of our Thanksgiving buffet. If you look closely at the photo, you’ll see gloppy, whited-out letters after the words “Happy Thanks.”

My son Andrew made the sign in 2012 to welcome my sister Stacy, brother-in-law Mike and nieces Jordan and Madison to our home. We hadn’t seen them in over a year, and they were flying to Virginia to celebrate the holiday with my family.

When Andrew realized he couldn’t fit the word “Thanksgiving” on the small poster board, he could have given up, but he didn’t. Instead, he whited out everything after the word “Thanks” and embellished the sign with two turkeys and a pumpkin. I love this sign because it shows that, even though life doesn’t always go the way we planned, we can still persevere and make it beautiful.

My sister Stacy T. Simmons, author of Celebrate Lit’s Briar Creek Love series, unexpectedly passed away in October 2022. Like the word “Thanksgiving” on Andrew’s sign, Stacy’s time on earth was cut short. But while she was here with us, she made life beautiful for her family, friends, students, and readers.

Yesterday was my second Thanksgiving without her and I still miss Stacy more than words can express. I’m thankful for the years we shared together and the many wonderful memories we made. But I’m even more thankful for God’s gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, because I know that I will see Stacy again in Heaven.

Stacy T. Simmons wrote uplifting fiction to delight the reader’s romantic sensibilities. She began writing at the age of fifty and was thrilled when her first Briar Creek Love novel, A Promise for Faith, was published in January 2022. Stacy passed away later that year, leaving her second complete novel, A Journey for Hope, and a partial manuscript for A Season for Grace.

As Stacy lay dying, her sister Beth Collins promised she would finish her final book. Through prayer and determination (and with help from Stacy’s publisher and critique group), she fulfilled that promise. A Season for Grace will be published in August 2024.

Day 13

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

Of all the things I’m thankful for, none would be counted as treasures without the gift of faith from the Almighty God. When counting my blessings, my family is first and foremost, but without faith, I’d be overcome with the magnitude of difficulties that life brings, especially with our large brood. However trying life becomes, resting upon the solid foundation of faith in Jesus Christ lifts the heavy burden of living in this world. My heart overflows with gratefulness for His outpouring of family love and the faith that we share. It is God’s precious gift that allows me to weather through pressures that might otherwise have the power to overcome me. Not so with God’s precious gift. For my faith is not in this world but in the hope of eternity. Hallelujah! This hope I have for my family, my friends, acquaintances, and strangers, and when all seems lost, I can share Jesus’ gift of eternal love and life. I am indebted to Him for the purpose he’s given me through faith. That being to live my life for His glory, which I can’t do on my own. FAITH… It’s immovable, unshakeable, staunch, and sure. Thank you, Jesus!

And without faith, it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Romans 12:3

Day 12

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. I Thessalonians 5:18

During the season of Thanksgiving, we gather around family and friends, expressing gratitude for life’s blessings. I try to concentrate on my list of blessings as I face each day.

The verse above tells us to give thanks in all circumstances. During difficult seasons, we might question, all circumstances, really? Even dire ones. Declining health, loss of job, death of a loved one, depression, care of a loved one. The list and degree of difficulty varies for each individual.

But God desires for us to give thanks anyway because of His goodness and love that endure forever. Join me in a season of thankfulness that transcends our circumstances.

Day 8

It’s easy for me to be thankful for the fantastic things God blesses me with or what He does for me. My hubby and I pray before turning in every night by reviewing our day. I am thankful for this practice and for having a hubby who enjoys praying. We begin by thanking God for all the good things that happened and for how He blessed us.

What about thanking God for the things we didn’t enjoy? Or the things we didn’t want to happen? Should we add those to our lists? How or why could we be thankful for those?

Our world spins within a chaotic wind. An overview of our world’s history tells us of other chaotic times. Yet, turmoil doesn’t affect our good Father. He remains steadfast in His love and blessings for each believer as He monitors events in our lives and listens to our prayers.

We can thank our good Father God for His faithfulness to us in the difficulties we face.

God blesses us with His grace, mercy, and love in all circumstances.

His perpetual sovereignty covers us and screens the trials He allows.

Our good Father invites us to draw near to His throne of grace when troubles afflict us.

I am most thankful for this generous and accessible gift of God’s presence. Is there any other relationship more incredible and one-sided than the astonishing love of God through the Savior of us all, the Lord Jesus Christ?

Day 17

I am thankful for the medical care I’m receiving in order to meet the challenge of my illness. I am thankful for my easy chair where I can comfortably read and rest. I am thankful for the multitude of provisions the Lord sends to meet my daily needs. I am very grateful for my friends. I am especially thankful for my loving family. I am thankful for God’s gift of my dear wife and her faithful love and her patience as my chief caregiver. Above all I am thankful for my gracious Lord and Savior and the blessed assurance of his amazing grace. “For we know that if…our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God…eternal in the heavens (2 Cor. 5:1).

Day 25

Why I Am Thankful
If you had asked me a few months ago what I was thankful for, the first things that would have come to mind would have been a bunch of really nice circumstances. Family, church, friends, comforts, and so on. I would have thought of spiritual things, too, that I am thankful for, but they would have been slightly more of an afterthought, and a little bit taken for granted (“Well, of course I’m thankful for my salvation …”).
But that was then and this is now. We’ve had a hard couple of months— my husband has just started cancer treatment, one daughter has been in the hospital for seven weeks so far (no end in sight), another daughter is debilitated by a different disease, and there are several other things that are very difficult. Does it sound melodramatic to say it’s a dark time?
Dark times change priorities. While I am still thankful for my family, our church, and my friends, what I am most grateful for are the promises of God. Honestly. I’m clinging to those right now.
God has forgiven my sin.
God has promised me a home in heaven.
God has promised never to leave me or forsake me.
God has promised to strengthen me, help me, and uphold me.
God has promised that all things work together for good to those who are His.
My human nature calls these promises into question regularly. I am a very weak person—in the words of Christina Rossetti, “the feeblest of God’s host/The sorriest sheep Christ shepherds with His crook.”  I do not naturally rise to a challenge—I’m far more likely to give up early and slink home. But Jesus does not fail, and He upholds me. This is what I am thankful for this year.

Day 15

This year, we’ve had extreme blessings and extreme sorrows. Things were hard even while we rejoiced. And yet, God was—and continues to be—rock steady in all of it. Our world is built on shifting sand, but Christ is the rock on which we stand.

I am grateful for that—the steadiness of God. He is just and His nature is unchanging. Recently, I was writing about patience and steadfastness. As I researched the use of the word “steadfast” in the Bible, looking for applications related to patience, I realized that it’s almost always connected to God’s love. His steadfast love.  There are HUNDREDS of uses of that term. Not just love, but steadfast love. Very rock-like.

In this shifting, uncertain world, God is still our rock, our fortress and our deliverer. His steadfast love endures forever. That rock-like, steadfast love is what we can cling to in our times of uncertainty and anxiety. God’s steadfast love endures forever, and I am grateful.

I love you, O LORD, my strength.

The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,

my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,

my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.  (Psalm 18:1-2 ESV)

How blessed we are, to know and be confident of the steadfast love of God!

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  (Philippians 4:6-7)

Day 6

The Lord has given me so much to be thankful for in my life. My family is the most notable blessing to me. They have loved me and supported, especially when I was having difficulties. I am very grateful for the advice they have given me and all their efforts that have made me the person I am today. From them, I have been able to learn so many things that have guided me through my life so far. They have taught me how to overcome things that would have held me back from so many experiences that have grown me as a person. My family has also encouraged me in the things I love to do. I love them so much and am so thankful the Lord has surrounded me with them.
