When the Curlews Call

Some say all Sophia Randall thinks of are romance novels and dance frocks…

That may have been true once, but when war broke out, reaching even to our isolated corner of the bush, my priorities changed. I now read news from afar and dance but rarely.

Only my love for the Almighty God, for family and friends, for the man who captured my heart, for the bush, and for the call of the curlew haven’t changed. Especially the call of the curlew.

Some say it’s mournful—even sinister—but I’ve always delighted in that lonely cry heralding the end of another day. And when Kenny went off to war, it became a promise—a reminder of his love and determination to return.

When the unthinkable happens, my prayers become listless. New challenges surface. Ghostly footsteps join the coal trucks rumbling through town. Dingoes lurk in the shadows. Valuables vanish. A… presence chases me through the bush. Burdens weigh me down, and I forget to remember.

But is all lost? Would the pain in my heart be easier to bear if I stopped to listen for the curlews’ call?

Loosely based on “The Boy Who Disappeared”, When the Curlews Call is a story of ghostly doings, missing airmen, and a young girl desperate to keep the home fires burning when all hope seems lost. Told through a series of letters, readers will follow Sophia’s journey, sharing her triumphs and trials all through the long, dark days of World War II.

Persuade Me Not

Daughters of the Bush

Book Cover: Persuade Me Not
Part of the Daughters of the Bush series:

Forgiveness is only a prayer away, but with a man willing to do anything to silence the one person who can prove his guilt, is it too late to hope anyone can forgive?

As the oldest daughter of the Walter Elliot of Kellynch Station, Elizabeth Elliot prides herself on her exemplary public image. Poised, fashionable, and striving to better the community for the good of all, women could learn a thing or two by following her example.

Of course, that excluded the things Liz doesn’t want known, but those are her lot in life and the less anyone knows, the better. In fact, keeping everyone except her best friend from ever seeing the truth behind her impenetrable facade is the only thing she can control.

Enter Michael Page.

Unassuming, and too stubborn for his own good, Mick bucked the trend in a major way by bringing sheep back to cattle country. Just a small flock at first, but their numbers were growing and pretty soon he’d have the old shearing shed up and running again. But before he can focus on that, there’s another issue that just won’t go away.

Liz Elliot.

With all her airs and fancy ways, and the unreasonable demands she makes of the town and its people, Liz antagonized him from the start. He should have just stayed home at Wallaby Run after they butted heads that first time, but something kept bringing him back. Someone had to foil her outrageous attempts to do who-knew-what with the town.

There was that still, small voice too, telling him there was more to Liz than the eye could see. Mick could ignore that voice no better than he could ignore the carefully worded slip of the tongue that hinted at a mystery involving Liz that might be worth digging into.

As the truth comes to light in this quiet Aussie bush town and Liz’s carefully crafted world comes crashing down, can she trust that the man who once vowed to bring her to justice will keep her safe?

This book is a great read that hooks you on the first page and doesn't let go. I loved how the author wove bible verses through the story and how it blended in with the story. Liz and Michael's story is full of action, drama, suspense, sweet romance and God's love and forgiveness. I highly recommend this book.

She sometimes wonder if God has a purpose for her there or if she should just move on.

I was drawn to this book because I have enjoyed everything this author has written and sure enough, I was not disappointed! The action grabbed my interest from the first page as I met the main and supporting characters surrounding a 1940s Hollywood film production studio. I didn’t like the hero, Kent Selwood, in the beginning as he came across as arrogant and selfish but was delighted to see the positive change in him as he received help from an unlikely supporter, seamstress Bonnie Roseland. Her quiet and unassuming personality and the way she lived out her faith were so inspiring to read and I couldn’t help but root for her and Kent not only in solving the mystery, but as a couple. The solving of the studio crimes was most interesting and not what I had been expecting and made for a great ending!
If you are looking for a quick, engaging and inspiring mystery, I highly recommend this book, as well as this author!

Relinquished

No one takes her kid and gets away with it.

When Teagan Parsons discovers that the Amber Alert on a celebrity couple’s child is actually her daughter, she’s determined to rescue the daughter she relinquished years ago. If she’d only realized the emotions her mission would rekindle…

Having a cousin in the FBI gets her closer to the case than she could have dreamed, but instead of listening to the lead FBI agent’s warnings to “leave the job to the professionals,” Teagan begins following everyone she suspects. That old saying, “Don’t quit your day job,” has never been truer, but she’ll do whatever it takes to bring her daughter home safe.

Mitch McCartney has enough trouble on his hands without dealing with a guilt-ridden, biological mother bent on making up for past sins. Teagan seems to have developed a talent for getting things wrong and putting herself in danger. Oh… and she’s adding theft to her rap sheet—theft of his heart, anyway.

Then Teagan goes missing.

Learning you can’t undo the past is a tough enough lesson without adding on more mistakes, but with Mitch’s help, Teagan may, with the Lord’s Guidance, forge a brighter future this time.

Shadow Dancing

The Bedford County Series

Wading through grief is like dancing with shadows.

Bekah Casey’s been on a tear for near a year, and the anger clings to her like cheap perfume. If only the Lord would wash it away like He did with her sins, she might could find her way out of the mire. Instead, she escapes from the one person to blame for all her ills—her husband Mitch.

Now she’s living with her mama and daddy, working two jobs, and facing a future that looks bleak as a middle-Tennessee winter. Her mama’s all the time telling her that the good Lord works in ways too confounding to comprehend, and if she’d learn to trust in Him, her life will look a might brighter. Easy for her to say.

When things go from dark to disastrous, Bekah figures she's got two choices—sink in her sin or dig her way out

Mitch Casey never did put a whole lot of stock in faith. Didn’t appear it helped Bekah any either since hers went sideways the minute things got hard. Still, he’s willing to take whatever abuse she throws his way if it helps her muddle through the grief. Then one poor decision, a night in jail, and a divine assignment with a local pastor puts Mitch on an unexpected path.

When you're dancing with shadows, who gets to lead? Find out in the next book in the Bedford County series

This book is absolutely amazing! It’s so full of God’s redemptive power and forgiveness for self and others.
The amount of anger and unforgiveness Rebekah holds toward Mitch is so real and relatable as is Mitch’s understanding and long suffering towards Rebekah! It’s such a life lesson in just how easily we can allow these two emotions to control our every thought.
The ease with which this author brings such enormity to the teachings of God in these areas is mind blowing as well as the way she brings full circle God’s redeeming power.
This book spoke to the depths of my soul on so many levels and I’m so grateful to Jennifer Sienes for being the tool God used to touch me so deeply.
I was very gratefully given a complimentary copy by the author. My opinion is my own.

A Troll Falls

A 1940s Fairytale-Inspired Mystery

Murder. Even the word sounds ugly. Almost as ugly as the corpse on the shore.

Dallas, Texas, 1948

Opal Stedman enjoys caring for old Mrs. Farnesworth. But keeping her sister Ruby out of trouble, well that is another issue entirely. Especially now that Ruby has stepped into high society with her new beau. A dubious man. Maybe even duplicitous.

Even the handsome security guard warns her sister about him.

When a body is dragged onto the shore of the lake that borders their home, rumors and worries over the new man become assurances. But why has he involved her household in these gruesome shenanigans?

And why are Opal’s loved ones suddenly having “accidents”?

Loosely based on the little-known fairy tale of “Snow White and Rose Red” this mystery twists its way all along the banks of White Rock Lake during its heyday.

A body found in the lake, a mysterious push that almost caused a drowning, a note that brings more questions than answers and more will keep you wondering through this retelling of a fairy tale from many years ago. Opal Stedman had many reasons to fear but even more reasons to leave it all in the most capable hands of the Lord. Ruby, her sister, was spending time with a questionable man - another thing for Opal to be concerned about. White Rock Lake outside of Dallas, TX became the setting for this mystery.

A Deeper Love

Year One

What was that movie line about relationships built on intense experiences?  Oh, yeah. They never work.

I get paid to do my dream job, usually by wealthy men who thrive on adventure. But when their adrenaline rush is gone and vacation is over, I’m still here, on a tropical island, with people who mostly leave me alone. And I like it that way.

Except for this guy. Seriously, Dan is the last man I want to get involved with. If he got Decompression Illness, the doctors would likely call it Mercedes Bends. He’s privileged and entitled and would never leave his city life behind for the challenges of living on a remote island. Which is a total relief, I’m telling you.

Don’t get me wrong—he’s prime shark bait, but I’m not ready to fall deeply in love with someone who won’t stay. There’s no such thing as going “too deep” where spiritual things are concerned. But when it comes to relationships, I’ll stay at the surface and snorkel rather than dive into the depths.

Take a trip to the Suamalie Islands where palm trees sway, the sand and sea pulse with life, and the people will steal your heart.
